Bio

marzj drumtoko pic Marzj started playing drums at the age of 14. Playing along with cd's from bands she liked, she decided to get some drumming lessons for real. Her first teacher is Jan Lindemans. Within a year she decided to play in bands and join the project '1000 drummers op de Maas' (a project of Golden Earring-drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk to put a record in the Guinness Book of Records, getting 1000 drummers to play together at the same time). Her first band is called 'Ursa Minor' their music was inspired by bands like Nirvana and other grunge bands. They recorded a demo (on cassette!), and played a few gigs.

subheadThen Marzj started a new band called Subhead together with some friends of her older brother. They played all the music styles they could imagine, being inspired by bands like Primus, mr. Bungle, Rage Against The Machine, The Pixies, 2227 and different jazz/latin/metal/ska/ folk and classical music.

At the same time Marzj went to jam sessions and started playing in several cover bands with music styles like blues, rock, latin and funk.

After four years Subhead came to an end after recording a full-length cd ('satisfaction guaranteed') and playing lots of gigs. The band reached the finals of 'de Kunstbende'.

EezeeThen Marzj joined another group called Eezee. They played pop and rock covers but started also to write their own material. They recorded an album called 'Eezee does it' and played in lots of café’s, venues and festivals.

Marzj decided that she wanted to study drums at the conservatory and took drumming lessons from Arend Niks. After this she went to the preparatory course of the conservatory in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After a year she decided that this school was not her 'cup of tea'..... She wanted to play more rock and metal oriented music and during that time the conservatory could not offer what she needed to learn.

When Marzj was 21 years old she started studying at the brand new Rockacademy in Tilburg, the Netherlands. This time she was at the right place to learn and grew as a musician as well as personally.

Eezee split up just as some other bands started, such as: Spats MaLone (playing metal/rock/funk), a funk project with former Prince guitarist Miko Weaver and Casino (grunge/indie-rock) who even got to the finals of 'de Grote Prijs van Nederland'.

lxo During the last year of her study at the Rockacademy, Marzj joined the group 'League of XO Gentlemen' (LXO) with rapper Rudeboy (ex-Urban Dance Squad) as the front man. They first played a 'Marlboro Flashback Tour', playing songs from the group 'Public Enemy'. After this tour they went into the studio to record their album 'Smiling at the claptrap circuses' (Idol Media). After the release, LXO played a lot of gigs thru the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and a few in Italy, Hungary (Sziget-festival) and the US (South By Southwest in Austin, Texas).

Just after graduation Marzj got the chance to replace Koen Lieckens in a gig with his band 'K's Choice' at the Marktrock festival in Leuven, Belgium. A few months later Marzj went to Burkina Faso (West-Africa) to do a music project with the local rap group 'Yeleen'.

During the recordings of the 2nd demo, League of XO Gentleman split up. The May Bees continues playing and went touring Canada and the east coast of the US. Coming back from that, Wampus Recordings (US record label from Washington DC), offered them a record deal. Their first full-length album ('Drop Little Boy') is released in 2007 in the States and the Netherlands. The record contains songs from their first 2 demo's + some extra songs.

E-Quad cd klein In the same year Marzj started playing in the band E-Quad. The music can be described as dance/funk/jazz/world/rock. They went to tour thru South Africa and after that they recorded their first record ('No Smoke').

Both The May Bees and E-Quad played several gigs in the Netherlands. Marzj decided to quit The May Bees in 2008 due to differences in what they wanted with the band in the future. The May Bees continued and recorded a new album, which will be released in September 2011. Marzj will join them for their upcoming shows!! E-Quad decided to quit in 2008. All the musicians were too busy with their other musical activities.

szense heel kleinDuring the same time Marzj worked with these bands, she also worked on a project of her own called 'Szense'. Getting funds from 'Muzieklab Brabant' she recorded an album together with 3 other musicians. The album is released in 2009 by Dutch record label 'Music For Speakers’.

She left the school and became a teacher at the Herman Brood Academy (MBO-music school in Utrecht, the Netherlands) for 4 years. She was a guest teacher at the Rockacademy and since 2009 she is a coach at the ACRA (a course to prepare young musicians for the auditions of the Rockacademy).
